A Melting Pot?

Well...there has been a lot of controversy over the issue of immigration.  People from other countries (most notably Mexico) have been flooding into the USA.  Some people believe that because America is the 'Melting Pot' of the world, they can freely and without restriction cross our borders, work, and live here.

Fact of the matter is there are laws and regulations that immigrants must follow, if they want to live here in the United States.  In fact there are rules and regulations that must be followed even if you just want to visit in the USA.  The reasons for this are really self evident.  How can a country see after it's own welfare if it allows anyone to come in without restriction?  The answer is ...it can't.

Now I have no bias against Mexicans...but I think to be fair, it's reasonable for Mexicans or Hispanics to be profiled in areas where there are large numbers of illegal immigrants. Fact...most illegal immigrants in this country are Hispanic...so if you want to find illegal immigrants, including people of European descent just doesn't make sense.

Similarly almost all terrorists are of Arab descent...including African Americans or whites, just doesn't make sense.  Too often we in this country we allow common sense to be subverted by extreme civil libertarians who think any and everything can be explained away by claiming a difficult childhood.

So...is America a melting pot?  Of course it is.  The diverse culture of this country is one of it's crowning achievements.  However...if you want some of what we're cooking in this 'Melting Pot'...you had better follow our rules.  If you can't do that...go back to where you came from...(I mean that with all due respect).

In my opinion it does not make a difference if you are born here or came from a different country......Rules are to be followed by all.

To anonymous thanks for the comment. I'd like to say...Exactly! Everyone should follow rules, or more importantly laws. Some people think that because rules or laws are inconvenient they don't have to be followed. KLH

Hello,
I have been in the states for 10 years and I got my citizenship 5 years ago. As an American citizen I have the same rights as you do.
Just because you were born here does not give you the right to say that other people can go where they came from (with all due respect). The law is the same for all.

I really do appreciate your participation in this dialog. You are right, as a citizen you have the same rights as a person who was born here. However, your last sentence is not true, some laws regarding immigrants do not apply to U.S. citizens and vise-versa. Immigrants by law do not have the same rights that citizens do.
