Our Days Are Numbered

We are unique among all God's creation in that we know we are going to die.  Some may think that is a curse.  Others believe it's a blessing.  I think it's the later, and I believe that God intended it to be that way.

The fact that we know we will die, can move and inspire us to do great things.  Consider how difficult it would be to get things done if we knew we had forever.  People care about their legacy, and so they do great things.  Businesses are created, art is created, works of outstanding generosity are done, because we know we do not have forever.  Procrastination would rise to an unfathomable level if people lived forever.  People's incentive to do good would be greatly diminished in a world where people lived forever.

The first fact of life is... life is short.  If we could remember that, we could use our time here for more than:  working at a job we hate, fighting with people we love, being unkind to our neighbors, fussing about things that really are not that important.

So what really is important?  I think it's reconciling ourselves with the last fact of life... life is short.  The reason I believe, is to move us to act diligently to make the world a little bit better when we leave, than it was when we got here. So...live well.

Knowledge of our mortality is a great force that shapes our lives. Your point is inspiring; we should not be scared to attempt great things. We should be inspired to be the best that we can be for all of those around us. The real lesson is to never give up. That isn’t easy for a lot of us to do.

Michelle: Thanks for the comment. I agree that we should never give up...but to take it a step further I think we should choose a path for our lives and then execute like our life depended on it...because it really does. KLH
