After our discussion he had me sit on the exam table (exam tables always seemed to be over engineered in my opinion)...anyways...He checked my ears, my throat, my blood pressure, etc. Then in a very casual manner said the words I knew I'd hear...I was prepared to hear them and still they rattled me when they were uttered..."Ya know Ken, you need to have a rectal exam." What I wanted to say was NOOOOOOOOO! But (no pun intended) what came out was "Yeah...I know...I've been preparing emotionally for it".
Now I know there's realistically no way for me to prepare for a fairly young strapping man to insert ANYTHING into my most vulnerable of places. But, I'm over 40 and that's what they do to men over 40...Insert them. So, he told me to drop my pants and underwear down to my knees, and bend over. Damn, damn, damn!!!
As I pulled up my pants....questions filled my fragile mind: Would this be as appalling for women? What about gay men would they hate it as much as I did? What if I had gas? I know prostate health is very serious, but...Shouldn't there be a better way?

For the record, it can be appalling for women too, we've just gotten used to it. Try throwing your legs up in cold stirrups while a strapping young man you just met does a rectal and a pelvic at the same time. Have you experienced the cold speculum? I think not. Nobody likes being vulneralble. A small price you pay for good health.
Nobody thinks you're gay now, so get over yourself and thank God you are healthy!
You write very well. I love it how you put yourself in other people’s shoes.
I giggled a little while reading this…..Maybe because I know you……LOL
