Not Now But Right Now

All we have is right now.  That is a simple elegant powerful truth.  So often we get caught up in anything but 'the now'.  I myself have thought about things that happened months or years ago, and gotten whipped up into a lather.  I have imagined scenarios that never happened and gotten quite upset.  I am sure that I am not alone.  This (for lack of a better word) habit is paralyzing.

People who don't act out of fear are focused on anything but 'now'.  Either they are reflecting on a past experience or imagining a future experience.  The simple truth is the past is over and can never be redone.  The future is just that the future.  All anyone ever has is right here, right now.  How does that benefit us?

First of all we can learn from the our own past experiences and those of others.  However to attach ourselves to the past renders us incapable of acting in our own behalf right now.  People who have been hurt in relationships often times make foolish choices in current relationships based on the past.  The truth is right now, today, we can make new decisions that empower us.  We can forgive and or forget hurtful things that have happened to us, not for the benefit of others but ourselves.  Only when we are free from the chains of past hurt and disappointment can we put ourselves in the best possible position to live powerfully.

Second, many of us fixate on the future, fearing what might happen.  In doing so we once again forget that all we have is right now.  RIght now we are here, we are alive, and able to act. The future is always determined by what we do right now.  The only way a nail can penetrate a board is by hitting it with a hammer right now.  The fact that you might strike the nail tomorrow doesn't get the job done today.  Again, fear is based on past experience or a future we have imagined.  I would suggest that since all we can do is imagine future experiences, that we should imagine a future that empowers us.

We all have the power at any given moment to focus on all we have right now. We can make a choice that truly serves our best interest.  Right now, you are as powerful as anyone who has ever been, or who will ever be.  Use that power carefully and use it well.
